Without a doubt, U-Haul is the big gun in the truck rental industry. U-Haul was founded in 1945 by Leonard Shoen and his wife. U-Haul is an Amerco, company. Americo is also involved in real estate, and insurance. The founders, the Shoen family,  now own about 40% of the company’s public stock.

The company leases trucks, trailers, and other equipment. Some U-Haul dealers also offer storage, propane fuel, trailer hitch and wiring installation, and a variety of other services. U-Haul has the largest truck fleet in the industry, and many centers and dealers to choose from. There are 15,000 dealers across the country. The company’s trucks and trailers are easily recognized with the trademark orange and white coloring, and regionalized photo like murals

Budget Truck Rental and Penske Truck Rental are U-Haul’s chief competitors.

Moving truck rental doesn’t have to be complicated, in fact truck rentals can be quite easy.

Renting a moving truck however, may take some time. There are a few things that you can do to make the process easier, and some things you should have with you to complete the rental.

The moving truck rental company that you choose, is about to lease you a very large and expensive piece of equipment. They will need to have some assurance that you are responsible, both financially and otherwise.

• You will of course, have to have a valid drivers license. This should be self explanatory.
• A credit card is very helpful when renting a moving truck. It is not a necessity, but it will make the whole process easier.

If you do not want to use a credit card, most truck rental companies will accept cash. For a cash transaction, you will need a few extra forms of assurance such as:

• Relatives names addresses and phone numbers.
• Possibly your banking information.
• Proof that you reside at the address given on the form, such as utility bills.

Most moving truck companies have computerized the rental process, which is a double edged sword. Some of the systems can be a bit slow and tedious, depending partially on connection speed, but they are almost foolproof.
